About Chino Y Chicano

Chino y Chicano is a podcast with a mission to dish on the good, the bad, and the ugly of what people of color face in America. Hosted by veteran journalist Enrique Cerna, the show features guests who explore the complexities of race. Take a listen to the episodes here.

The Chino y Chicano podcast launched in 2022 with co-hosts Matt Chan, “The Chino,” and Enrique Cerna, “The Chicano.” Both spent their careers in television. Chan created the cable series "Hoarders," while Cerna worked as a Seattle broadcast journalist for 43 years. After Chan died on March 30, 2024, following a battle with kidney cancer, Cerna committed to continuing the podcast in his honor.

Seattle artist Erin Shigaki joins Chino y Chicano to discuss her mural Never Again Is Now, created for Bellevue College in 2020. The artwork, depicting two Japanese American children in World War II incarceration camps, became the center of controversy after the college removed references to businessman Miller Freeman and his role in anti-Japanese activism. The fallout contributed to the resignations of Bellevue College president Jerry Weber and vice president Gayle Colston Barge. As the mural is rededicated six years later, Shigaki reflects on historical memory, institutional accountability, and renewed controversy sparked by a racist voicemail directed at the project.
